In honor of Autism Awareness Month, Vivint also launches smart home giveaway for families affected by autism spectrum disorder.

PROVO, Utah (March 28, 2018) — Vivint Smart Home, a leading smart home company in North America, today announced the grand opening of a sensory room at the Vivint Smart Home Arena for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other intellectual and developmental disabilities. The room opens to the public this Friday, March 30, for Autism Awareness Night at the arena when the NBA’s Utah Jazz face off against the Memphis Grizzlies at 7 p.m.

Designed and built by Vivint and the Jazz, the sensory room is one of the most advanced in any NBA arena. The room provides a safe haven for children with conditions related to neurodiversity during NBA games and other arena events.

Vivint also kicked off a national smart home giveaway in honor of Autism Awareness Month to give away free smart home systems in April to four families affected by ASD.

“Vivint is dedicated to helping families keep their loved ones safe and secure,” said Nate Randle, chief marketing officer at Vivint Smart Home. “Children with autism and their families are especially important to us as they face unique challenges, both at home and in other environments. Our goal is to help give these parents and families greater peace of mind, especially when they attend a Jazz game or other events at the Vivint Smart Home Arena.”

Vivint Smart Home partners with several advocacy groups, including Autism Speaks, the National Autism Association and the Autism Society.

Vivint Smart Home Arena Sensory Room

The Vivint Smart Home Arena sensory room features a variety of games and tools to help provide a sense of calm or stimulation, depending on individual needs, including state-of-the-art multisensory stations, play therapy stations and activity panels. It also leverages technology stations featuring Apple iPads and provides relaxing spaces for children and their families, including quiet cubbies that allow for alone time. The environment includes an overview of sensory therapy and the uses and benefits of each component in the environment.

“Sensory rooms aid in both calming and stimulating the senses for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities,” said George Ballew, licensed clinical social worker and clinical director of the Peers Academy at the Heritage Treatment Center, who consulted Vivint on the design of the room. “This helps them cope with situations and environments where it may be difficult for them to remain happy and productive, such as a professional basketball game and other arena events.”

Through its charitable foundation Vivint Gives Back, Vivint and its employees have helped build nearly 60 sensory rooms in schools and homes throughout the world.

Vivint Smart Home Giveaway

Vivint will give away free smart home systems with five years of professional 24/7 monitoring to four families affected by ASD throughout April. The giveaway is open to any North American household with at least one member with ASD, Vivint employees and current customers excluded.

Eligible households can submit a 1-2-minute video explaining their situation and describing why they would benefit from a smart home system. Vivint will accept submissions through April 20, 2018 and will announce the winners at the end of Autism Awareness Month.

Smart home systems can alert parents when children with autism attempt to wander from safety. By monitoring key exit and entry points with smart sensors and cameras, smart home technology provides parents peace of mind and greater capacity to keep their children in a safe, supervised environment.

Vivint customer Rob Gorski, father of three children diagnosed with ASD, knows first-hand the impact a smart home system can have.

“Many individuals with autism have a tendency to wander from a place of safety, and often gravitate toward bodies of water or train tracks,” Gorski said. “Having a smart home system is life-changing because I’m alerted anytime a door opens or one of the kids goes someplace they shouldn’t be, and we can check in on them from anywhere. It helps us keep them safe while still allowing them some independence.”
